A proper Devonport local since 1865, with friendly faces and a well kept pint, tucked away just two minutes from the dockyard. Step in for a drink and a chat, then stay for another.
The bar has been refreshed with care and the outside is being brought back to life with a new garden. The aim is simple, to keep the heart of the place while making it somewhere you want to spend time.
Pop in and say hello; if you have not been for a while you will notice the difference straight away.
Kim and John Richards run The Herbert. They sold their home to buy the building and are restoring it with patience and pride. John is a builder and is leading the work on the fabric. Kim looks after the bar and the welcome.
They live above the pub and plan to be here for the long haul. No fancy changes for the sake of it. The character stays. The pub stays a pub.
If you have a story about The Herbert, bring it in. The history belongs to the people who use it.
Step outside and you’ll see Kim and John standing in front of the Herbert, the pub shining once again on Herbert Street.
The fresh paintwork and careful restoration stand as proof of their hard work, a building cared for, not covered up, and a pub ready for the future.
The beer garden is a quiet corner of the neighbourhood, well kept and welcoming. It’s a proper sun trap where you can sit back with a drink, catch up with friends, and enjoy the simple pleasure of a pub done right.
The interior has been given a new lease of life with deep red curtains, modern grey walls and comfortable furniture. The renovation blends old and new, keeping the warmth and character while making it a space you want to spend time in today.
